Title:  AMTK F40PHR 377
Description:  Amtrak F40PHR 377 at Auburndale, Florida on September 29, 1984, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This photo shows the combining of two trains. The 377 will cut off its train and couple to the front of 271, which has already cut off its train. The two units will pick up 377's train and combine it with 271's train. I believe this was train 87 and 97, the Silver Meteor.

Title:  AMTK F40PHR 386
Description:  Amtrak F40PHR 386 at about Roosevelt Road and Michigan Avenue in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in July 1982, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was some kind of railroad exhibition held on the site of the former IC Central Station which had been torn down. The platforms remained for a while. I happened to look out of my office window and noticed a lot of activity where there ususally was none, so I wandered down with a camera on my lunch hour and photographed whatever I saw.

AMTK Fuel Tender 400
Title:  AMTK Fuel Tender 400
Description:  Amtrak 400 at about 18th Street in Chicago, Illinois sometime in July 1978, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Searching the Internet for more information about this, I found the following:

Yeah Ed, I was involved in some of those issues about 20 years ago when I was working on Amtrak's Fuel Tender program. We had an old E-8 loco that had both engines removed and replaced with (6) 1350 gallon aux. water tanks from the old SDP40-F's. Total fuel capacity in the E-8 including belly tanks was 9300 gallons of #2 fuel. The fuel level gauge was removed from one side of the fuel tanks on two F-40's and replaced with a float switch. One F-40 at each end of the E-8. Every time the float switch dropped, pumps would kick on in the E-8 and transfer fuel to the F-40's through hoses with quick disconnects. Of course, the transfer rate on those pumps didn't need to be high capacity. On one trip from Chicago to Seattle, we got to Seattle with almost enough fuel on board to return partway to Chicago WITHOUT refilling in Seattle. We used a fuel consumption rate of 2 gpm per F-40 (that's gallons per mile!) plus fudge factors. On the return trip when we passed through Spokane, where there was a drive-up fuel truck alongside the station track...he was going to pump fuel no matter what until we explained we didn't need his services on this trip (guess he didn't get the message). All this got started due to the fact that the contract RR's were no longer using the fuel stanchions at the end of the passenger station platforms. The EPA tried to get the contract RR's to clean up those areas, but they explained that Amtrak was the only one using them. Sooooo, the EPA went after Amtrak to clean up the mess. Amtrak had about 180 fuel sites across the country and thought that one way to eliminate the problem (and excessive cost) would be to carry the fuel and eliminate the need for en-route refuelling. Evidently, the cost of a fleet of "fuel tenders" was excessive. I think Amtrak has since gone back and put containment pads in and improved the fuel nozzle shutoff features. Just a little history from my RR'ing days. cb

There were two Amtrak EMD E-units numbered 403, this appears to be the 2nd 403. The first 403 was former B&O E9 40, later B&O 1457 (c/n 20380), retired by Amtrak in October 1975. This one was built in July 1952 as PRR E8 5803 (c/n 15667) on EMD Order 6354, was renumbered to PRR 4283, then PC 4283, then Amtrak 403.

Amtrak E9 404
Title:  Amtrak E9 404
Description:  Amtrak E9 404 at the South Station in Boston, Massachusetts on an unknown day in April 1979, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 404 was built in December 1963 as SAL 3060 (c/n 28524) on EMD Order 7667 to replace a wrecked E8, later renumbered to SCL 599, later still becoming Amtrak 404. One source states that this unit was the first to receive the Platinum Mist paint scheme: "applied at Waycross Shop in early 1972". Another source states it was overhauled at the MILW Shops in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1974, likely the source of the pilot.

Amtrak E9 414
Title:  Amtrak E9 414
Description:  Amtrak E9 414 trailing (a P30CH is leading) at Roosevelt Road in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in Larch 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 414 was built in August 1961 as UP E9 909 (c/n 26673) on EMD Order 7604, was leased to Amtrak in May 1972 as AMTK 1414, sold to Amtrak in December 1973 becoming AMTK 414. It is seen as the trailing unit on The Valpo, renamed The Calumet by Amtrak.

The Valpo began in 1869 as the PRR Chicago–Valparaiso Accommodation, also known as the Valpo Local or The Dummy. It continued under PC then Conrail until 1979, when Amtrak took over. Amtrak added an addition train between Valparaiso and Chicago, named The Indiana Connection, but by 1990 Conrail decided to abandon its route through Valparaiso, forcing the discontinuance of Amtrak's Valpo trains. The last run of The Valpo was May 3, 1991. The bridge in the background is the ICG's Saint Charles Air Line.

Title:  AMTK E8 439
Description:  Amtrak E8 439 without a pilot and an unidentified E unit with icicle breakers at about 18th Street in Chicago, Illinois on an undnown day in March 1981, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. According to the book, Amtrak By The Numbers, number 439 was built in February 1952 (c/n 15712) as RF&P E8 1007, became AMTK 21>, was rebuilt in April 1974 to E8A-R 439 and officially retired in July 1981, although it looks retired here. The locomotives were parked on leads to Dearborn Street Station, closed in 1971. Santa Fe's Super Chief and other passenger trains once used these rails. The rails rising in the background were the IC (ICG on this photo date) rails ascending to meet the ICG's Saint Charles Air Line on the bridge in$the background. I don't know the purpose of the tower building seen on the right.
