Amtrak E9 407 at 18th Street in Chicago, Illinois on and unknown day in May 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 407 was built in February 1956 as Milwaukee Road 201A (c/n 21603) on EMD Order 2075, arrived on the MILW property with freight-style pilots, quickly changed to passenger-style and renumbered to MILW 31A, sold to Amtrak in 1971, becoming AMTK 407. It was built to UP specifications (including dynamic brakes) for use on UP's "City" trains, which were switched from the C&NW to the MILW for the trip between Omaha and Chicago on October 30, 1955. The lift rings were installed during the early 1960's at the MILW Shops in Milwaukee. |
