CN local approaches N. Oneida St. as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails near downtown Appleton, WI on 22 Jul. '14. Train iad just finished working Little Chute and Kaukauna was heading back to Neenah, it will make a brief stop at Appleton Junction enroute. There used to be a lot of rail activity along this stretch, the buildings on both sides of the track used to veceive rail service for example, but that was probably more than 25 years ago. |

Rail Activity in Manawa Again, Sort of. |
Description: |
CN 074930 and GBW 1001 at Depot St. in Manawa, WI on 23 Jul. '13. The MoW worker was working in the signal relay case, the door is open. Is it just routine maintenance, or could it indicate rail traffic returning to this line in the near future? I haven’t been able to pinpoint the location of the 1898 wood-frame depot, but I think it stood about where GBW 1001 is now. Some photographs of that depot can be found at: http://www.greenbayroute.com/manawa.htm. |

Looking southeast along CN, former GB&W, rails at Depot St. in Manawa, WI on 23 Jul. '13. I believe the ca. ‘51 cinderblock GB&W Manawa depot was located to the right of the station sign. Some foundation remnants are visible and part of a fence, similar to the one that enclosed the base of the radio tower, is hidden in the overgrowth. Description: |
The trail unit of a CN Stevens Point to Green Bay train idles on former C&NW rails on the siding at Stroebe, WI on 27 Jul. '14. Train had two locomotives, CN 5798 pulling and CN 5641 pushing. The 40-car train halted at the northeast end of Stroebe siding, to wait for a local which was dropping a string of cars at Appleton Junction. For some reason the trail unit uncoupled from the train and ran back to the southwest end of the siding, seemed a little unusual. The western approach to the Roland Kampo Bridge over Little Lake Butte des Morts is in the background. |

E&LS train passes the team track as it approaches Main St. while hauling 27 cars northward via former MILW rails at Abrams, WI on 31 Jul. '14. It is cool to see a former MILW unit, ELS 500, running on former MILW rails; obviously it would be much cooler if was wearing its original paint scheme. The pulpwood cars could easily be loaded where they sit. Are the covered hoppers loaded or unloaded by Abrams Feed & Grain (out of frame to the right) somehow, or are they spotted here for some other reason? On old maps it appears the depot stood to the right, west, of the cars on the team track, but there is clearly enough room for the depot to have stood between the tracks, with the team track running behind it. |

A CN local approaches the former C&NW swing bridge over the Fox River Navigation Canal at Lock No. 3 (out of frame to right) as it hauls 37 cars westward vhrough 'The Flats' at Appleton, WI, on 4 Aug. '14. Train had just descended the grade from Telulah Park on its way back to the yard at Appleton Junction after servicing Kimberly and Combined Locks. This view was captured from the abandoned former C&NW fixed bridge over the Fox River. The active line was originally laid by the MLS&W. I used to think that the abandoned bridge was former MILW, but I have since learned that it was C&NW. Over the past several years, I have noticed that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Alats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. For all of my life, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton has been simply ‘The Flats.’ However, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries it was referred to as 'The Water Power.' |

CN local approaches S. Vulcan St. after spotting a boxcar for the Neenah Paper mill (formerly Fox River Paper Co.) on former C&NW rails in the Flats in Appleton, WI on 6 Aug. ’14. The small white, building (background right) is a replica of the Vulcan Street Plant, the country's first Edison hydroelectric central station designed to serve both residential and commercial customers. It began operation 25 Nov. 1882 and this replica stands at the approximate location of the original. This generator was identical to its more famous twin, which began generating electricity 3/4-mile upstream on 30 Sep. ’82 (that one serving just commercial customers). |

IC 9601 |
Description: |
A crewman is about to close the gate as CN local prepares to depart after exchanging a boxcar at the Neenah Paper mill via remnants of the former C&NW mainline at Neenah, WI on 7 Aug. ’14. The company was founded at Neenah, WI, as the Patten Paper Co. by Azel Wilder Patten in 1873. The original 150’ by 40’ paper mill was built in ‘74 on the former site of the Empire Flour Mill and several smaller businesses (the Old Council Tree sign adorns the southeast end of the orginal portion of the facility). In ‘81, A. W. Patten built a second Patten Paper Co. mill at Appleton, WI. Samuel A. Cook and Frank T. Russell purchased the Neenah mill in early ‘85 and incorporated as the Neenah Paper Co., with A. W. Patten as president. The company was later taken over by the Kimberly family, some references state they acquired a controlling interest in ’93, others state John A. Kimberly, Jr., bought the mill outright in 1900. When the original portion of the paper mill was built, 4 other sizeable industries stood between its west wall and Cedar St., now N. Commercial St. Numerous additions were erected over the years as the mill expanded westward and northward (some additions were built on pilings above the Fox River). By ’26, when their Mediterranean Revival-style office building was constructed, they occupied the entire small peninsula east of Commercial St. Neenah Paper Co. officially became a division of Kimberly-Clark Corp. in ‘56, and operated as such until it was spun off in 2004. |

IC 9601 vs. Inattentive Driver |
Description: |
CN local has a close call with an inattentive driver in a “quiet zone” as it crosses Washington St., via former C&NW rails, while switching in Menasha, WI on 7 Aug. ’14. The engineer blew the horn when he realized the driver did not see the train and was not stopping, but the truck was on the tracks by the time the driver could stop and start to back up. Both the train and the truck were moving slowly, so the near-collision was easily avoided. |
