Title:  GM&O E8m 100A
Description:  GM&O E8m 100A at Glenn Yard west of Chicago, Illinois on June 6, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Not a pretty picture, but it's the only shot I got of this locomotive, and it has an interesting history. Built in June 1937 as B&O 52, it was one of only six EMC model EA's built, B&O 51-56. The B&O also had the only EB's built, six matching boosters, 51x-56x. These units had twin Winton 201A 12 cylinder prime movers rated at 900 hp each, 1800 hp total, and the A units had a sloped cab similar to the E6. In 1940, B&O 52 was transferred to the Alton (then controlled by the B&O), becoming Alton 52, and when the GM&O absorbed the Alton in 1947, it became GM&O 100A. In March 1953, it was sent to EMD for rebuilding to E8m, returning still numbered 100A. I believe it was rated at 2000 hp, owing to the reuse of some of the original components, notably the main generators and traction motors. It worked for Amtrak for a while, was taken out of service in August 1974, and finally sold for scrap in March 1975 to Precision National.

This is Train Number 3, The Abraham Lincoln. According to the June 1965 edition of The Official Guide, it departed Chicago's Union Station daily at 4:50 PM (CST) and arrived in Saint Louis at 10:10 PM. Included in the consist was a Observation-Parlor Lounge Car (#30), Parlor Car with Drawing Room (#31), Cocktail-Lounge for Parlor Car and Coach passengers, a Dining Car, and Reclining Seat Coaches. Also listed is a connection at Saint Louis with unnamed MP Train Number 7 which continued on to Little Rock, Arkansas.

Description:  Gulf Mobile & Ohio Railroad E7 102 southbound on The Limited at Joliet, Illinois on July 11, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built as Alton 102 in March 1945 (c/n 2003) on EMD Order E544A, it was one of four E7's built for the Alton on that shop order (No.'s 102, 102A, 103, 103A). This unit was wrecked at Ocuya, Illinois in August 1971 and scrapped at Jackson, Mississippi. It is seen here at the head of Train No. 1, The Limited, due in Joliet at 11:55 AM CDT, and this being Daylight Saving Time, it's almost 1:00 PM. According to the June 1965 Official Guide, 'All through Gulf Mobile & Ohio trains are air-conditioned and diesel-electric powered. All parlor lounge cars Trains 1-2-3 and 4 are owned and operated by the GM&O RR.'

This locomotive was built as Alton E7 102 (c/n 2003), wrecked and retired in August 1971. It is seen here bringing GM&O's daily Train No, 1, The Limited, to its first stop out of Union Station in Chicago. It's due at Joliet (according to the June 1965 Official Guide) at 11:55 AM CST, so it's almost 1:00 PM Daylight Savings Time, when I snapped this photo. If on time, it will arrive at it's final stop, Saint Louis, Missouri at 4:43 CST, 283.9 miles from its starting point. This train was equipped with a Parlor Car (with Drawing room), Dining-Lounge car and reclining seat coaches. Also listed on the GM&O page in the Official Guide was a connection with MP Train No. 1, The Texas Eagle, which offered a connection to Little Rock, Arkansas, departing Saint Louis at 5:30 PM and arriving at Little Rock at 11:55 PM.

Description:  GM&O E7 102 at Saint Louis Union Station, Saint Louis, Missouri on August 14, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in March 1945 (c/n 2003) as Alton E7 102 and became GM&O 102 after the 1947 merger. It was wrecked in August 1971 and scrapped. This is an example of a railroad modification to the EMD design air ventilation to the engine room. As built, there were unfiltered louvers behind the cab door above the letter G, plated over by the GM&O. In place of the louvers, the railroad cut three filtered openings above the word MOBILE in the car body to allow intake of combustion air. There is also an extra air intake grill at the top rear of the car body, not seen on the trailing E7. This was sometimes applied by railroads (also seen on CB&Q E7's) to allow intake of makeup air for the steam generators.

I recall reading somewhere that it took the EMD engineers some tinkering to get the GE traction motors to work with EMD electronics. It is seen here in the dead line at the shops in Paducah, the Illinois Central's main back shops which, at the time of this photo, were shut down. This locomotive became ICG GP30 2258 and was eventually rebuilt to CSX slug 2256. Stencilled under the cab window are the words: ISELIN SHOP, and on the access door below the central air intake grill are the words: TEST FILTER ELEMENT DO NOT CHANGE.

The following is excerpted from the June/July 1982 issue of Mainline Modeler Magazine, article beginning on page 27 by Bruce Meyer: The trucks on the ICG's ex-GM&O GP-30's and GP-35's were from Alco FA/FB trade-in's. The Alco four-wheel swing bolster trucks with the special Alco lever pin and retainer at the pull rods were rebuilt at EMD, which also rebuilt the GE Model 752 traction motors to their specifications. The original GE 74:18 gear ratio was retained due to the large center distance between the 752 armature shaft and axle. This gear ratio provided a maximum speed of 71 mph. All units were equipped with dynamic brakes. The GM&O obtained a total of 31 GP30's (#'s 500-530) in 1962-63, and 48 GP-35's (#'s 601-648) in 1964-65. South of Venice, Illinois, the GM&O was what might be called a "drag railroad", with trains run at or near full tonnage. Between Venice and the Ohio River, the tonnage rating in both directions was set by a hill called Alto Pass. Although Alto Pass was not very high or long, it was steep, and included a number of curves. The railroad expected to hang everything but the kitchen sink behind the new GP-30's and GP-35's and crawl up Alto Pass. During the years 1963, 1964, and 1965, the railroad and EMD conducted many wheel slip tests in drag freight service on the hill. The somewhat different electrical characteristics of the 752 traction motor and the ride response of the AAR Type B trucks required a number of modifications to the wheel slip systems in order to obtain maximum tonnage over Alto Pass. Trotting along side of the lead GP-30 of a four unit consist climbing Alto Pass, moving under five miles per hour in 8th throttle, in order to watch the slipping lead axle is not recommended practice, but it was done in the interest of "science". Alto Pass has been abandon now in favor of the more gentle grades on the old passenger main line of the Illinois Central just a few miles to the east.

This locomotive was built in September 1963 (c/n 28426) on EMD Order 7666 and was eventually rebuilt into CSX road slug 2254. Stencilled under the cab window are the words: ISELIN SHOP. It is riding on trade-in trucks from Alco FA1's, generally referred to as AAR Type B truck, although it appears that that term originated at Alco, not the AAR. A more correct term might be GSC Type B truck, since the design originated with General Steel Castings, a foundry jointly owned by Alco and Baldwin. Quoting from the Alco-GE Locomotive Specifications for the 1600 HP A unit, Section 3-Trucks : TYPE - Two four-wheel, swivel, swing motion, pedestal type motor trucks applied. CONSTRUCTION - Cast steel construction. Frame is spring supported on two equalizers on each side, with triple coil springs between the equalizers and the frame. Triple elliptic springs are applied between bolster and spring plank. Center plate safety locks applied. AXLES - Two (2) axles, of forged open hearth steel, per truck. WHEELS - Four (4) rolled wheels, 40" diameter, per truck, to A.A.R Specification M-107-48, Class "B".

The reason for the fresh ballast is that the connection to Dearborn Street Station has been torn out. Built in January 1965 (c/n 29749) on EMD Order 7764, it was later renumbered to ICG 2526 and eventually became the property of VMV Enterprises. It rides on Alco trucks from GM&O FA1 trade-in's. The following is excerpted from the June/July 1982 issue of Mainline Modeler Magazine article, beginning on page 27, by Bruce Meyer.

Description:  Gulf Mobile & Ohio Railroad F3 880B departing Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in June 1978, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in December 1946 (c/n 3601) on EMD Order E695, it was retired in October 1978, the prime mover was removed, and it was put on display in a park in Farber, Missouri. However, the city felt it was a liability and safety hazard, and it was scrapped sometime around 1990. It is seen here heading a train known as "The Plug", a GM&O commuter train between Chicago and Joliet (anyone know the origin on the train name?). Also seen is BN E9Am 9910 which fared a bit better in the survival game, for a while, working for the Nashville and Eastern after retiring from the BN in 1992. It is seen here about to divert to the southwestern suburbs of Chicago.

The sanders appear to be on as "The Plug", GM&O's commuter train between Chicago and Joliet accelerates out of Fort Wayne Junction and heads southwesterly toward Joliet. Fort Wayne Junction was the name of the location just south of the South Branch of the Chicago River, where both the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Gulf Mobile and Ohio Railroad shared a bridge. Once over the bridge, the railroads parted ways. It was so named because the PRR's Fort Wayne sub was the route into Chicago. This same junction was known as the Alton Junction to the PRR and Milwaukee Road people, named for GM&O's predecessor into Chicago, the Alton Railroad. Alton Junction also marked the southern end of CUS Company (Chicago Union Station) rails.

This was known as Fort Wayne Junction to the GM&O people (it is listed as such in the GM&O Employees Timetable, and the published direction is Southward) and this is Train #17, unofficially, The Plug, the GM&O's commuter train between Chicago and Joliet. In the consist is a borrowed Amtrak coach, substituting for a GM&O coach in for maintenance. For the record, The Milwaukee Road also referred to this location as Alton Junction in their Employees Timetable (to define the limits of Chicago Union Station tracks).

It later became ICG 6055, then IC 6055, then IC 6034. Another source lists this locomotive as wrecked at Freeburg, Illinois on August 29, 1989 and retired. Perhaps it was rebuilt after the wreck, I don't know for sure.

Built in January 1949 (c/n 76625) it was retired in September 1976. Note that the road number is painted on the headlight glass L&N style. The GM&O must have been pleased with a 1000 hp road switcher, because the RS2 was in production at the time this unit was built, offering 1500 hp in a similar configuration. The RS1 production ran from the first unit for the Rock Island in 1941 to the final units for the NdeM built in 1959-1960.

The RS1 was powered by a 6-cylinder inline turborcharger McIntosh & Seymour Model 539 diesel prime mover producing 1000 horsepower. The GM&O purchased 24 RS1's (road #'s 1102-1117 and 1120-1127) and through merger with the Alton Railroad acquired another 10 (road #'s 50-59). The RS1 holds the record for the longest running production of a single model, first produced in 1939 at the request of the Rock Island, and concluding with an order for the NdeM in 1960.

Description:  Gulf Mobile & Ohio Railroad RS1 1126 at Union Station in Chicago, Illinois on October 17, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in April 1949 (c/n 76796) it was retired in June 1974. It is seen here next to the PRR Polk Street Freight House (there were 18 tracks under this building) on the south throat of Union Station. According to the clock in the upper left of the frame, it's almost 1:25 PM, and GM&O Train No. 2, The Abraham Lincoln, is due in Union Station at 2:08 PM. More than likely, the 1126 will couple onto the rear of the arriving train and pull it back to the GM&O's passenger facility at Brighton Park. The following is excerpted from the book, Chicago Union Station, by Edward M. DeRouin (Pixels Publishing).

The GM&O's Brighton Park Yard was the smallest of the coach yards used by the railroads of CUS (Chicago Union Station). From the 1860's, until B&O control in the thirties, steam engines were also turned and serviced there. The freight yard was the C&A's (Chicago & Alton) principle Chicago yard until superceded by the larger Glenn Yard in 1914. During the years of B&O stewardship, Alton passenger trains and engines used B&O's Lincoln Street Coach Yard and Robey Street (later, Damen Avenue) Engine House. During this era, Alton trains backed out of CUS with road power through Fort Wayne Junction to Panhandle Junction. From there the train pulled north on the B&OCT to the yard. After 1942, Alton steam engines and passenger equipment returned to Brighton Park. Only a few tracks were needed to service Alton's trains. When the E7's arrived in 1945, they could often be found idling between runs at the Harrison Street Freight House. Locomotive maintenance was assigned to points at the other end of the run, the E units maintenance base was Saint Louis. In the diesel era, recently arrived and emptied GM&O trains would back to the 16th Street wye, shove up the hill, descend on the south wye and head for Brighton Park for cleaning and restocking. Equipment returning to the station would back directly from Brighton Park to the station track. While the PRR and CB&Q had some fast turns, the GM&O had its own turnaround champ. The Chicago-bound Abraham Lincoln, Train No. 2, was scheduled to arrive daily at 2:08 PM. The southbound Abe, with the same equipment, was scheduled to depart two hours and forty two minutes later at 4:50 PM. This train was a favorite for patrons of Springfield, Illinois and Saint Louis, Missouri. Often and particularly on Friday evenings, 800 passengers would be waiting as the Abe was hurriedly shoved northward toward the CUS platforms with the goal of a rapid boarding and an on-time departure.

Yes, it was snowing, so there is some snowflake distortion. According to the October 1971 issue of the Official Railway Equipment Register ( ORER ), the GM&O had 188 of these 50 foot double door ( 15 foot door opening ) numbered 54100-54299, 4932 cubic foot capacity. Some of the cars must have left the roster as early as 1971. It was stenciled as BLT. 9-61 and WHEN EMPTY RETURN VIA REVERSE ROUTE TO AGENT GM&O RR, and below that was stenciled: HOME FOR REPAIRS RULE 1 DO NOT LOAD UNTIL REPAIRED. You may wonder why the car was parked in downtown Chicago when it should have been routed to a repair yard. At the time of this photo, the ICG owned a lot of very valuable real estate in downtown Chicago, in the form of a rail yard, which now is Chicago Park District. The ICG had to show occupancy of the property in question, less the City of Chicago condemn it and take it over. So the railroad parked a bunch of derelict freight cars in said yard.
