| Gulf Mobile & Ohio Railroad RS1 1122 at Glenn Yard on the southwest side of Chicago, Illinois on February 14, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The RS1 was powered by a 6-cylinder inline turborcharger McIntosh & Seymour Model 539 diesel prime mover producing 1000 horsepower. The GM&O purchased 24 RS1's (road #'s 1102-1117 and 1120-1127) and through merger with the Alton Railroad acquired another 10 (road #'s 50-59). The RS1 holds the record for the longest running production of a single model, first produced in 1939 at the request of the Rock Island, and concluding with an order for the NdeM in 1960. |
