Description: |
The fate of this 1911 Reading shops built ten wheel camelback is uncertain. Missing its bell which would be between the smokestack and sand dome makes me think it might be in a scrap line. No location or date was given for this older reprint. Specifics - L-8-se class, 68.5" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 22x24" cylinders, engine weight of 198,300 lb, tractive effort of 28,828 lb, superheated around 1920. Unknown photographer |

Title: |
RDG 4-6-0C #653 - Reading Co |
Description: |
Nice photo of the 1911 Reading Shops built 4-6-0C ten wheeler camelback, class L-8se. Notable on this unusual locomotive is the mammoth Wooten firebox which allowed the Reading to burn less efficient coal than traditionally shaped fireboxes, hence making these camelbacks a financial success at the sacrifice of human safety and comfort. The entire class remained in service until after WW II. No exact date or photographer listed for the photo. |
