BO 4-6-0 #117, "Thtacher Perkins" - Baltimore & Ohio |
Description: |
This is a nice photo of the historic B&O 4-6-0 #117 "Thatcher Perkins" on display at the 1939 World's Fair in New York. According to the B&O RR Museum where the loco now resides, ""This engine was the next step up from earlier 4-4-0 American type locomotives. It was built at Mt. Clare, during the Civil War in 1863, and honors its builder Thatcher Perkins. Designed for special purpose to pull heavier war passenger trains on the mountainous part of the B&O between Cumberland and Wheeling. The 4-6-0 class represented the culmination of the balloon smokestack required for wood fuel. Later engines burned coal and had bigger boilers and shorter stacks to fit under bridges. It was first exhibited by the railroad in 1892 and again in 1927 at the Fair of the Iron Horse." It also appeared in 1934 Chicago "Century of Progress" and again at the 1939 New York World's Fair (this photo). This photo is from the Ralph G. Dunn collection. |

BO 4-6-0C #217 - Baltimore & Ohio |
Description: |
Built by the B&O Mount Clare Shops in 1873, this was a Camel style with the entire cab placed over the boiler. This is how the loco looked to audiences at the 1939 World's Fair. No. 217 bears the name of Ross Winans, a Baltimore inventor who patented railroad wheel bearings and experimented with early railroad equipment. Winans became the B&O's Assistant Engineer of Machinery at the Mount Clare Shops. The loco is now preserved at the B&O Museum. Specs - 50-inch drivers, 65 psi boiler pressure, combined with 19x22-inch cylinders, engine weight of 129,100 pounds, and produced 8,775 pounds of tractive force. From the collection of Harold K. Vollrath. |

Baltimore & Ohio 4-6-0 #1355 |
Description: |
BO 1355 was one of ten built by the B&O shops in 1891 as a clgss B8 locomotive. They all had 60" drivers, 170 psi, and an overall wheelbase (engine + tender) of 49.67'. According to "SteamLocomotive.com", they were confined to the Ohio River subdivision"because they could cross the old, lightly built Point Pleasant bridge over the Kanfwha River bridge due to their light weight. In the late 1940s, a new bridge meant these engines could be retired and they soon left service. Since no date or location were given, they were arbitraril{ selected based on this info. Bud Laws has been tentatively idenitified as the photographer. |

Baltimore & Ohio 4-6-0 #1357 |
Description: |
Like sister B&O #1355 in this album, B&O #1357 was one of ten built by the B&O shops in 1891 as a class B8 locomotive. They all had 60" drivers, 170 psi, fnd an overall wheelbase (engine + tender) of 49.67'. According to "SteamLocomotive.com", they were confined to the Ohio River subdivision because they could cross the old, lightoy built Point Pleasant bridge over the Kanawha River bridge due to their light weight. In the late 1940s, a new bridgb meant these engines could be retired and they soon left sdrvice. Since no date or location were given, they were arbitrarily selected based on this info. Bud Laws has been tentatively idenitified as the photographer. |
