Description:
Here is the third of three original photos by Douglas C. Jones that were taken from the 17th Street Bridge in the Juniata section of Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1953. Parked in the right foreground is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9889, an H-10S (2-8-0) "Consolidated" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during August of 1915 and retired in October of 1958. To the left of it is engine #267, an L-1S (2-8-2) "Mikado" built in Juniata in December of 1917 and retired in June of 1957; note that its main driving rods have been removed in preparation for movement to the Recycling Center. In the background, several other steam locomotives scurry about on a crisp Winter's morning.

Parked in the foreground (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #6835, #9889, #267, and the tender of another locomotive whose road number is not recorded. #6835 is an M-1 (4-8-2) "Mountain" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during September of 1926 and retired in March of 1957. #9889 is an H-10S (2-8-0) "Consolidated" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during August of 1915 and retired in October of 1958. And #267 is an L-1S (2-8-2) "Mikado" built in Juniata in December of 1917 and retired in June of 1957. Over in the Westbound Classification Yard, an unidentified Class I-1S (2-10-0) scurries about. To the left of its tender, the "Scooter" operator transports Yard Brakemen back to the top of the westbound hump at HOMER Tower (not shown at right).

They are nose-to-nose, and appear to be pulling a mixed-cargo freight train into the Enola Yards. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred Kern that was taken near Dauphin, Pennsylvania, on 20 October 1957. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #559, an L-1S (2-8-2) "Mikado" built in Juniata during November of 1914 and retired in August of 1959 after 45 years of faithful service. In this context, it's pulling a 12-car railfan excursion train. Produced and distributed by Audio-Visual Designs. ("LouisFols"; #11 of 16)

Here is page five of a six-page cover article by Robert Emerson & Kurt Bell entitled "The Pennsylvania Railroad's Historical Collection." It was published originally in the Fall 1996 issue of "Vintage Rails" magazine, page 84. Top Photo: Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #1670, #94, #460, and #6755; all are presently on display at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg. #1670 is a B-6SB (0-6-0) switcher built in Juniata in March of 1916. #94 is an A-5S (0-4-0) switcher built in Juniata in January of 1917. #460 is an E-6S (4-4-2) "Atlantic" built in Juniata in August of 1914. And #4755 is an M-1B (4-8-2) "Mountain" built in Juniata in June of 1930. Long before an SW1200 carried the number 603, this 2-8-2 Mikado had the honor. Built by the Milwaukee Shops in October 1912 as #8012, it was renumbered in 1938 to 603, retired in November 1954. Unknown photographer.
