Former Milwaukee Road Shop Facility |
Description: |
Some bridge pieces at the CP Rail former Milwaukee Road Shop facility in Tomah, WI. Tomah was once the location for the Milwaukee's Maintenance of Way Shops. It included the Bridge Works, equipment shop, frog shop rail mill and served as the stores department. The facility served the entire Milwaukee Road system. The facility also repaired M.o.W. equipment. The Milwaukee Road Bridge Works started up here in 1890 and the Milwaukee's Frog Shop followed in 1907. The entire facility covered 100 acres. Following the Soo take over of the Milwaukee, the facility gradually closed down. The equipment shop closed in 1985, the rail mill closed in 1991, the frog shop closed in 1992 and the Stores Department closed in 1998. Not much remains in 2016. Former Milwaukee Road Property in Tomah, WI |
Description: |
Looking generally southwest into the property of the Canadian Pacific from N. Superior Avenue in Tomah. The acreage here was once home to some of the Milwaukee Roads shops. As of 2016, there is not much remaining that would indicate the importance the location in railroad history. The covered hoppers are most likely going to or have come from the Unimin Corp. sand quarry a few miles west of Tomah on the west side of the bore at Tunnel City. Unimin is the closest user of rail service to Tomah. The Coveris factory, reaching from the left side to the center of the photo does not have a spur. The quonset hut style structure in this photo dates from the Milwaukee Road era and can be seen in aerial views from the early 1970's. |

Milwaukee Road Depot in Tomah |
Description: |
Some sources state this former Milwaukee Road depot dates from 1903, others only state "early 1900's". The station is still a stop for the Amtrak Empire Builder along the route of the famed Hiawatha which ran 410 miles between Chicago and St. Paul on a 6.5 hour schedule. The steam locomotive powered Hiawatha sustained speeds of 100 miles per hour. |

Description: |
Looking east from N. Superior Avenue along the CP Rails former Milwaukee Road line at Tomah. The area to the left of the track was the eastern half of the M.o.W. Shops that was split by N. Superior Ave. The track that can be seen to the left of the main in the distance is the tail of a switch back to gain access to Keene's Transfer. It does not appear that Keene's utilizes the railroad currently. Also about five miles east of Tomah is another sand quarry. Smart Sand is located in Oakdale. Smart Sand has a busy rail-load network. |

Harper Leaf Tobacco Company |
Description: |
Tomah Lumber occupies the former site of the Harper Leaf Tobacco Company. The company was located within the Milwaukee Road's shops property east of N. Superior Avenue. The structure dates before 1930, which is when the tobacco company also incorporated the buildings of the Tomah Co-operative Elevator Association Inc. into their complex. The Harper Leaf Tobacco Company steamed, cured and packaged tobacco. The company had a spur coming in from the eastern side of the complex, but has been removed. Tomah Lumber does not use rail service, at least not directly at this location. |

Looking west from County Road M at Tunnel City. The connection from the old CNW right of way comes in from the right. CNW had their own route through town, with a tunnel of their own. The CNW bore collapsed in 1973 after which, the CNW built a connection track to the Milwaukee so they could both use the same bore. The CNW line west of the Tunnel was abandoned, as the CNW then used the Milwaukee Road track to Medary. (east side of La Crosse ) The Union Pacific now uses these trackage rights. |
