C&NW Chicago Station
Title:  C&NW Chicago Station
Description:  Chicago & North Western Railway station on Madison Street in Chicago, Illinois on October 24, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. In 1984 the head house (pictured), built in 1911, was razed and replaced with the glass-and-steel 42-story Citicorp Center, which was completed three years later in 1987, renamed the Ogilvie Transportation Center in 1997. The time shown by the clocks doesn't match, but I think it was Five PM. I wonder what was under the domes over the clocks. And a personal remark; I would not have chosen to advertise Fast Freight Service on the railroad's premier passenger station. The following is from the Wikipedia page on the Ogilvie Transportation Center:

The Chicago and North Western Railway built the Chicago and North Western Terminal in 1911 to replace its Wells Street Station across the North Branch of the Chicago River. The new station, in the Renaissance Revival style, was designed by Frost and Granger, also the architects for the 1903 La Salle Street Station. The station's 16 tracks were elevated above street level and reached by six approach tracks and sheltered under an 894-foot-long [272 meter] Bush train shed. The upper level of the head house housed a concourse and other facilities for intercity passengers, including dressing rooms, baths, nurses and matrons rooms, and a doctor's office. The centerpiece of the upper level was a stately waiting room, measuring 201 by 202 feet (34 by 62 meters), and rising 84 feet (approx. 26 meters) to its barrel-vaulted ceiling. In addition to the main concourse on the upper level, there was a street-level concourse for commuters.

C&NW 40th Street Shops
Title:  C&NW 40th Street Shops
Description:  Chicago & North Western Railway 40th Street Shops at Keeler Avenue in Chicago, Illinois on September 4, 1982, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was Keeler Avenue in Chicago, but it also went by the name 40th Street Shops. This particular building was known as M-19A to C&NW employees. Left to right: C&NW 503 was built as UP E2B 984C (originally, #LA3, c/n 743, EMC order number E158B, built October 1937), rebuilt by EMD in March 1953 to E8B 925B. After Amtrak took over rail passenger service in 1971, B-units were not in demand, and the C&NW picked up a few, this one entered C&NW service June 5, 1973. The C&NW added a homemade cab (Crandall Cab), and put the E-8Bm in commuter service. Number 400 is an Executive F, and yes that is a different yellow paint than the other units have (called Zito Yellow, a reference to Jim Zito, senior vice president-operations at the time that use of the paint began around 1980). This was the 2nd 400, delivered October 1949 to the C&NW as F-7 4084C (c/n 8573), retired January 8, 1985. The next two (#'s 406 and 413) are work-a-day commuter F-7's. Number 406 pictured was actually the 3rd 406. The first was Minneapolis & St. Louis (M&StL) F-7A 150A, and the second was Litchfield & Madison (L&M) RS-3 301, later 905. This one was built as C&NW F-7A 4086A in December 1949 (c/n 8576 on EMD order E1188), retired December 31, 1977, sold to the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) and leased back to the C&NW the very next day, January 1, 1978, retired from the RTA May 2, 1983. So, if this photo was shot on the date I say, there might be more research in order. Number 413 is the 2nd 413, the first being M&StL F-7 151C, retired in 1963. The one pictured above was delivered to the C&NW as 4083A (c/n 8750 on EMD order E1188) in December 1949, renumbered December 1971. It was retired from the C&NW December 31, 1977, sold the the RTA, and leased back to the C&NW the next day. Utahrails.net lists it as retired from the RTA on May 2, 1983, but I feel pretty good about the date of the photo, so perhaps some sort of arrangement took place to keep it on the road a bit longer. At the time of this photo, the C&NW was "Employee Owned", and the C&NW's Ball And Bar logo at the top of the building appears to have been adjusted accordingly.

C&NW BU3
Title:  C&NW BU3
Description:  Chicago and North Western Railway Yard Slug BU3 and GP7 1532 at Proviso, Illinois on February 14, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Yard Slug BU3 was built in September 1942 as C&NW SW1 1207 (c/n 1738) on EMD Order E489, rebuilt December 24, 1958 to BU3 and mated with GP7 1532. It was retired May 13, 1982 traded to EMD during April 1986 and scrapped by Saint Louis Auto Shredding. Note that someone has chalked B/O on the rear step/frame likely indicating Bad Order.

C&NW BU4
Title:  C&NW BU4
Description:  Chicago and North Western Railway BU4 at Proviso Illinois on an unknown day in October 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number BU4 was built in October 1949 as C&NW TR2B 2000B (c/n 10023) on EMD Order E1305, was rebuilt December 15, 1961 to Yard Slug BU4, and mated with TR2A 2000A. It was retired May 1, 1980, sold to the KCS becoming KCS 4079. Note the interesting mix of trucks, one is likely in the shop. This appears to be the track the C&NW stored locomotives on temporarily.

C&NW BU5
Title:  C&NW BU5
Description:  Chicago and North Western Railway Yard Slug BU5 at Proviso, Illinois on an unknown day in September 1979, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Number BU5 was built in October 1949 as TR2B 2001B (c/n 10024) on EMD Order E1305. On June 26, 1962 it was completed as Yard Slug BU5 and mated with its original control unit, TR2A 2001A. It was retired May 1, 1980, sold to the KCS, becoming KCS Yard Slug 4058. The open doors are the likely source of why this unit was sidelined.

C&NW H-16-66 150
Title:  C&NW H-16-66 150
Description:  Chicago and North Western Railway Fairbanks-Morse H-16-66 150 at Proviso, Illinois on February 14, 1965, Kodachrome by by Chuck Zeiler. Number 150 was built for the CStPM&O in February 1951 (c/n 16L278) on F-M Order LD-96, acquired by the C&NW in 1957 by way of merger, retired in 1971.

This is an early production (Phase 1) H-16-66 and is riding on Baldwin 13 foot wheelbase rigid-bolster, fully equalized trucks, which were actually General Steel Castings Commonwealth C-type trucks. The Phase 1 H-16-66's were equipped with Westinghouse electrical gear (Model 370-F traction motors on each axle). Later H-16-66 production units were equipped with GE electrical gear and rode on F-M's Tri-mount drop equalizer trucks designed for the Train Masters built in 1953. The H-16-66's were known as "Baby Train Masters" (note that Train Master is two words), and produced 1600 horsepower from eight cylinders (16 pistons in the opposed-piston design).

C&NW H16-66 150
Title:  C&NW H16-66 150
Description:  Chicago and North Western Railway H16-66 150 at Proviso, Illinois on February 14, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Number 150 was built for the CStPM&O (which was controlled by the C&NW) in February 1951 (c/n 16L278) and retired in 1971. The following is from an article by Robert Aldag Jr. in the April 1987 issue of Trains Magazine:

In 1950, FM had, at C&NW's request, modified its old-style H16-44 design to the H16-66 configuration. It amounted to a custom design; however, except for the six-motor switch gear and the small changes to the underframe for the six-wheel trucks, FM got by with its standard H16 design. The truck had already been designed, being the one Baldwin used for its various C-C units. It was a truck that looked, and rode, like something that had been rescued from a steam locomotive tender, vintage 1930. But the C&NW was satisfied with it and purchased 25 of those H16-66's, not a bad deal for FM. In the Train Master era, Milwaukee Road came to the time for dieselizing its branch lines, so in response to that need, FM scaled down its Train Master to create the new-design H16-66. The C&NW bought some of those as well.

It is listed at utahrails.net as retired in June 1985, traded to EMD and scrapped by Saint Louis Auto Shredding. The actual retirement date may have been earlier, judging by the trash bags covering the exhaust stacks and what appears to be missing batteries.

Number 210 was built in March 1948 as CGW F3 112A (c/n 5014) on EMD Order E858, was acquired by the C&NW in the 1968 merger, was C&NW 112A until 1971 when it was renumbered to (2nd) 210, retired in June 1985, traded to EMD and scrapped by Saint Louis Auto Shredding. It was built by EMD with D27B traction motors, heavier cables, and higher capacity traction motor blowers, but was otherwise an F3. Some sources refer to this as an F5, however EMD never cataloged a model F5.

Title:  C&NW F7 400
Description:  Chicago and North Western Railway F7's 400 and 406 at Keeler Avenue (40th Street Shops), Chicago, Illinois, September 14, 1982, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I hope I get this right, there were two C&NW F7's numbered 400. Based on the MU cover (the other 400 had a surface-mounted plug) the locomotive on the left is number 400 was built in October 1949 as F7 4084C (c/n 8573) on EMD Order E1188, was renumbered to 415 during January 1972, was renumbered to 400 during 1982, retired (due to sagging frame) January 8, 1985, sold to Karsten Railcar Services, and it may be the 400 in Spooner, Wisconsin on the WGN. Number 406 was built in December 1949 as C&NW F7 4086A (c/n 8576) on EMD Order E1188, renumbered in 1971 to 406 (3rd), retired by the C&NW December 31, 1977, sold to the RTA and leased back. It was assigned RTA number 300, but that number was never applied. It was retired by the RTA May 2, 1983, and sold to St. Louis and Chain of Rocks Railroad, May 1985.

Title:  C&NW F7 400
Description:  Chicago and North Western Railway F7 400 at Janesville, Wisconsin on September 16, 1984, photo by Chuck Zeiler. A Comment by A. J. Gonfiantini on a previous photo of this train asked where in Janesville were these photos taken. I do not recall and if anyone knows the answer, or what train this is (obviously a Special) please leave a Comment. Thanks. I went on Google Earth today, and it appears that there is a wye in Janesville. Judging by the signal bridge, the C&NW (or somebody) had grand plans for Janesville, Wisconsin.

C&NW 401
Title:  C&NW 401
Description:  Chicago & North Western Railway 401 in Chicago, Illinois on May 19, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I marked the slide as 401, unfortunately, the car configuration does not match the C&NW 401 as it appeared in the 1980's. It's possible the car was rebuilt between 1966 and 1980, or perhaps the 401 was replaced with a second car numbered 401. I'm still researching. Here's what I found so far, on donrossgroup.net

C&NW 401 "Wyoming" was built by Pullman in November 1925, Lot 4923, as Pullman Co. "Monte Viso". It was rebuilt as "Capitol Road" and sold as C&NW 400, business car, in 1948 and rebuilt as 401 "Wyoming". It was sold to a private ownership and renamed "Carolyn". It was resold to Ozark Mountain Railcar and apparently resold.

C&NW F7 401
Title:  C&NW F7 401
Description:  Chicago & North Western Railway F7 401 in Chicago, Illinois on August 7, 1983, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This train was a steam fan trip powered by N&W 4-8-4 number 611. There may have been some concern about the 4-8-4's ability to negatiate the pictured curve. I presume the diesels powered the train to a convenient location where the 4-8-4 could be added. The following is from the August 1983 issue of Trains Magazine Running Extra section:

August 6-7, 1983; Streamliner Overland 400 - 20th Century Railroad Club steam powered excursion using N&W J-class No. 611 will operate from North Western Station in Chicago to Sterling,Ill. and return each day via C&NW. Open window coaches, air-conditioned coaches, recording cars, open-sided car, souvenir/snack car, and photo run-by. First class section includes dome lounge cars, Pullman lounge, complete dining service, and C&NW business car 400. Coach tickets: $60 each, First class $120.

However, for some reason, diesels were used, at least on this part of the trip. I have photos of 611 at this same location the day before. The August 1983 issue of Trains Magazine shows the following under the Running Extra section: August 6-7, 1983: "Streamliner Overland 400". 20th Century Railroad Club steam-powered excursion using N&W J-class No. 611 with operate from North Western Station in Chicago to Sterling, Ill., and return each day via C&NW. Description:  Chicago & North Western railway F7 403 at about Halsted Street in Chicago, Illinois on May 25, 1982, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The power and business car had just cut off the Circus World Museum's train which had been brought to Chicago from Baraboo, Wisconsin. A C&NW NW2 switcher then coupled onto the rear of the train and set half off onto an adjacent track for unloading. The vintage circus wagons would be pulled down Michigan Avenue by horses during the Memorial Day parade.

Title:  C&NW F7 403
Description:  Chicago and North Western Railway F7 403 southbound at Jefferson Park on the north side of Chicago, Illinois on May 25, 1982, photo by Chuck Zeiler. On the day of this photo (or maybe the day before) the C&NW dispatched its Executive F's to Baraboo, Wisconsin to bring the Circus World Museum's vintage circus train and wagons to Chicago. Upon arrival in downtown Chicago, the wagons will be unloaded and horses will lead them down Michigan Avenue in a Memorial Day parade (I got pictures of that too). As I recall the situation, this train was slowly moving and I was chasing the train, so I stopped and grabbed a photo. The gentleman pictured was a local resident, who inquired what I was doing in his back yard. I explained the special train, and he came out to wave. The trailing units are 2nd 400 (already showing signs of the bow in its frame that ultimately sidelined it) and F7 402, coupled to the business car 400.

The 2nd unit back is 2nd 400 which was replaced by another F7 (3rd 400) because oj a bent frame. First 400 was a former M&StL F3A 248A (c/n 4948) retired in 1963. Description:  Chicago and North Western Railway F7 403 at Western Avenue in Chicago, Illinois on May 12, 1984, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Obviously a special train, I have no clue, I was expecting commuter trains. Please Comment if you have an idea what this train was. I'm guessing it was a Special that terminated, discharged its passengers, and is being dragged back to C&NW's coach yard between Western and Califonia Avenues.
