Album Info:Here are the front cover and a 17-page version of the Pennsylvania Railroad's 13-page booklet entitled "Altoona Shops Inspection Trip ~ Sunday, May 16, 1937." They appeared in the September 1981 issue of "The Keystone" magazine, pages 4-20. All of the photos were taken during the Inspection Trip and, as such, were not part of the original booklet. "With over 1,800 railroad fans and enthusiasts from Philadelphia, New York, Newark, Harrisburg, Wilmington, Baltimore, Washington, Pittsburgh, and Chicago in attendance, one of the biggest, longest, and fastest 'Off the Beaten Track' excursions in the history of these unique railroad trips was operated by the Pennsylvania Railroad on Sunday, May 16, 1937." (Page 20) The Round-Trip Fare from New York City was $5.25!

PRR engine #1223 is a D-16SB (4-4-0) "American" built in Juniata as a D-16B during 1905, later rebuilt as a D-16SB, sold to the Strasburg Rail Road in October of 1960, and presently on display at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg.

Chaney from the inspection car at the rear of the train pulled by K-5 No. 5699. Another section of the Inspection Trip is about to pull up and pass Chaney's train. This section was hauled by two K-4s locomotives, with No. 3768 in the lead." #3768 is a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during June of 1920, streamlined in 1936, and retired in October of 1953 after 33 years of faithful service.

Fales." #5699 is a K-5 (4-6-2) "Pacific" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during 1929 and retired in September of 1953 after just 24 years of active service. Note the absence of overhead catenary; the PRR's electrification project had not yet reached Harrisburg ~ hence the change from electric to steam power at Paoli, not Harrisburg.

Photo by Dr. Walter Teskey." #6744 is an M-1A (4-8-2) "Mountain" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during 1930, rebuilt in Juniata as an M-1B in February of 1947, and retired in September of 1959. Photo taken in front of the PRR's Erecting & Machine Shop in Juniata. The map includes a "Key" to Colonial Battlefields along the eastern PRR.

Top Photo, Partial Caption: "From a 'Fan's' perspective, E-3sd No. 5011 was perhaps the most interesting locomotive on display at Altoona. No. 5011 was one of the few, and very likely the only, E-3sd's to retain the old style cylinders while being equipped with the new steel pilot beam." #5011 is an E-3SD (4-4-2) "Atlantic" built in Juniata as an E-3D during 1910, rebuilt as an E-3SD in June of 1913, and retired in April of 1940. Bottom Photo, Partial Caption: "Assigned to the Altoona Works, No. 436 was one of several B-8a's employed in the Altoona area." #436 is a B-8A (0-6-0T) tank switcher built in Juniata as a Class B during 1912, rebuilt as a B-8A in June of 1924, and retired in October of 1956 after 44 years of faithful service.
