ELOI surprise |
Description: |
ELOI has made a pick up at M-K Hornell, which was rebuilding a fleet of R 32 and R 46 subway cars for NYCTA at the time. Usually BUOI got this task, but it must have been running late, or heavy, and ELOI, which was usually a light train, made the pick up. Too bad we didnt know it was out there-it would have been three trains on the EL Main Line west of Hornell that day, an unheard of occurrence for us. |

Single soon |
Description: |
Conrail had a plan to single track the Tier as far east as Binghamton. The plan was to start at CP River, roughly where the old NT tower was, and work east. This was the first section to be done-the segment from NT to Buffalo had been done by EL. We see TV 203 on the section to be single tracked from an old Erie steel bridge, now closed to traffic. There is a semaphore here on track 1, partly obscured by the diesel exhaust, which will be removed during the single track project. For now, it looks good as the train rolls down the Canaseraga Creek valley into Livingston County on the line as Erie built it. In a couple of years, track 2, on the right, will be gone. |

Coal on the high bridge |
Description: |
An eastbound coal train crosses the Portage bridge as seen from the falls below in Letchworth State Park. This is the highest bridge on the Conrail system at 240 feet above the Genesee River. It was built by the Erie in 1875 after a previous wooden bridge burned. As I write this in February 2015, its still in service at 140 years old. NS plans to replace it with a new bridge just to the south of the present structure. At one time, the Pennsys Rochester Branch ran up through the gorge. Some of the right of way can still be seen if you know where to look, and bridge piers can be seen in the river from the NY 436 bridge at Portageville. That line was abandoned in 1962. |

Description: |
The milepost to the right of BUOI gives away the location as the train approaches Hornell and a pick up at Morrison Knudsen. To the left of the train, next to the pole line, you can see a semaphore in the approach position. There were a pair of semaphores there, across from each other. It was not an easy location to access, hence there are few photos of that set, unlike the Tioga Center blades, which you could shoot from the shoulder of NY 17C. The train is on track 1, the "fast" track, with a 40 MPH speed limit. Track 2, the "D&H main", so called becaise some Conrail dispatchers would put D&H trackage rights trains on it, had a section of 25 MPH and a section of 10 MPH speed restrictions, making for a very slow trip to River Jct. |

Subway car pick up |
Description: |
BUOI couples to the flats loaded with NYCTA subway cars just shoved out of the MK plant, and will now back to the rest of its train, which it dropped west of Cass St. Once theyre back together, its off to Gang Mills and Jersey. There are two notable units in the consist. The second unit, 6840, is a former EMD SD 60 demonstrator. The third unit is one of the only ten C32-8's built. They usually were seen only on the River and Boston Lines, so this one is a stray. |

Rolling past Cass St |
Description: |
BUOI rolls into Hornell past Cass St tower, now a relay case for CP Cass, as it enters Hornell. The tower is partly seen at far right. To the far left, coming out from under the first car, the track leading to the left is the Erie main to Jamestown and Youngstown OH. It was cut the year before, when Conrail essentially abandoned it as a through route, with what little traffic remained served by Olean based locals, with cars forwarded over the ex PRR Buffalo Line. It would be another ten years til WNY&P resored the connectino after NS took over the line. For now, we have only the ghosts of ELOI and 2NY 100 to take the switch and climb toward Tip Top. |

Buy US Savings Bonds |
Description: |
Conrail had a couple of units painted to encourage purchase of US Savings Bonds. One of them leads ML 440 as seen from the overpass at Hunt, just east of the Portage Bridge. The signal alongside the train was a semaphore til a couple of years earlier; up til then there were a pair of them here. When track 2 was lifted, the signal was replaced with a Type G cluster signal. The roadbed of former track 2 has been graded and ballasted to make a maintenance road. |
