UP Southbound |
Description: |
Sunset at UP's Joso Bridge over the Snake River. C30-7 2429 leads an SD40-2 southbound, headed for Hinkle OR. This shot was taken from the State Park next to the bridge- the photographer and his photo partner, Charlie "Dr. Lego" Walsh, were parked in an RV, burning meat with beer in the cooler and enjoying the evening when the train reported itself on the radio. The picture was the easy part. |

The weather is suitably gloomy as we visit Washtucna WA, MP 291 on the BN's 5th Sub of the Portland Division. The town's water tower and other structures survive for now; the tracks won't last the year. |

High plains shortline |
Description: |
At one time Othello Washington was notable as the place where the Milwaukee Road switched from steam (and diesel) to electrics, which would take the road's traffic to Tacoma. It's now 1989 and the electrics are long gone as are almost all other signs of the once proud Milwaukee. Only Washington Central RR remains, with a single SW1200 and eight cars waiting for a crew on a dark and dreary May day. |

Trinidad Loop |
Description: |
Four units haul a BN stack train around the hard curve above Trinidad in May 1989. The train, behind three SD40-2s and an Oakway SD60, is making its way around the apex of the curve and will soon enter the short tunnel 11 before continuing east towards Spokane. The "Loop" (actually more of a hairpin curve) is located about 25 miles east of Wenatchee and marks the point where the former Great Northern left the Columbia river valley and climbed into the high desert of central Washington. The spot is probably one of the less heralded railfan locations in the west. |

New Home for the Baldwin |
Description: |
Mount Vernon Terminal RR bought a Baldwin VO1000 from the Navy in the mid-80s to replace its tiny Plymouths. The old engine house on the left (more of a shack) wasn't big enough for the 'new power' so they built a new one next to it and under Interstate 5. This is the view about half-way though construction. |

Water over the sheds |
Description: |
Water pours over the snowsheds of the former GN main at Tye WA, deep in the Cascade Mountains. This line was abandoned in 1929 in favor of the current GN/BN/BNSF Cascade Tunnel line, but a good portion of the line survives to this day as a hiking trail. The GN built miles of concrete showsheds for this line after an avalance in 1910 engulphed a train and killed over 90 people. |

Looking downhill at Lester |
Description: |
Lester was the NP's "mountain town" on Stampede Pass in the Washington Cascades. Located west of the pass and tunnel, Lester was home to a six-stall roundhouse until 1956 and remained an important train order station until well after the 1970 BN merger. The little town personified "out of the way" being inaccessible from the west by anything but rail due to the Tacoma watershed and reached from the east ony by narrow logging roads that crossed Stampede Pass. The route between Auburn and Yakima was largely shut down in 1982 in favor of GN's parallel Steven's Pass and remained dormant until reopened in the mid-1990s by BNSF. The depot was demolished in 1992. This view looks downhill to the west. |

Bow Washington |
Description: |
Bow Washington is where the BN's former GN main to Vancouver comes out of the Skagit Valley and starts to skirt Samish Bay for the run to Bellingham. It's a pretty location, surrounded by farmland and, at night, the airhorns echo hauntingly off the hills. This is BN train no.632, on its way north behind a pair of SD40-2s. |

"New Power" at Everett |
Description: |
The BN bought a small number of used SD9s in 1988-90. Freshly paigted in "white face" and with chopped nopes they certainly didn't look their age. 6240 and 6241 are both former DMIR units. |
