EL cab car |
Description: |
The EL Comet cars would become the standard for NJ Transit. As newer orders came on line, the cars began to roam systemwide, so it was not a total surprise to find one of the cab cars leading on the ex CNJ. They were a vast improvement over the 1920s era cars and long distance hand me downs that dominated the line in the 70s and early 80s. |

CNJ scene |
Description: |
NJT 4115 leads 5 cars west to Raritan on the ex CNJ at Bound Brook. The station can be seen at the right of the photo. The connection where Reading and B&O trains for Philly left CNJ trackage rights into Jersey City is about a mile to the west, and is at this time removed, as that service ended several years prior to this photo. There were once four tracks here on the CNJ. |

Pushing to Newark |
Description: |
The ex CNJ Raritan Line is now all push pull with F40s and Comets, a far dry from less than ten years ago, when it was still possible to see ex CNJ GP40Ps and GP7Ps with 1920s era coaches plying the line, which then went to Phillipsburg on the Delaware River. The new equipment is more comfortable and reliable, but I miss the aroma of brake shoe smoke coming in the open windows. Heres a rebuilt GP 40 type pushing a set of Comets toward Newark Penn Station for a connection to New York. |

Pushing across |
Description: |
The trains on the North Jersey Coast didnt seem to follow a pattern in the post GG 1 age. Unlike that era, where the power was almost always on the outbound end going away from New York, now the trains seemed to work either way. Here we have the cab car leading south as the train rolls over the river bridge. |

On the CNJ |
Description: |
This eastbound was pushing on the ex CNJ at Westfield, which still has its beautiful stone station. There were once three tracks here. The reduction in the scope of facilities on what used to be busy freight mains is stunning to anyone who remembers the glory days. |
