CNJ power on the NY&LB |
Description: |
The NY and Long Branch was jointly operated by PRR and CNJ prior to Conrail. CNJs trains originated from their Jersey City terminal until 1967, when the Aldene plan moved them into Newark Penn Station, with a cross platform transfer from New York connections. Here we see on of them, led by GP40P 4105. Note the crossing gates. They were manually operated at this time. |

Two units to Phillipsburg |
Description: |
NJ Transit continued running two rush hour trains to Phillipsburg NJ, as well as a mid day run, until 1983. Here one of the rush hour trains is ready to go from Newark Penn Station behind a GP7P-note the squared off end on the long hood of the lead unit-and a GP40P. NJ Transit adopted the paint scheme used on the EL U34CHs until it came up with the "disco" scheme in the mid 80s. Many of the fans thought this was an elegant paint scheme, and that the new scheme was not an improvement. |

Disco E 60 |
Description: |
I dont recall that any of the other E 60s got repainted in this scheme. This one was at Hoboken for the festival, and may have been painted primarily for the purpose of showing it off there. The E60s never had the success of the GG 1s, and were soon replaced by a variety of European design electrics in the late 80s and 90s. This unit had to be towed in, as it was powered by alternating current and could not run on the DLW 3000 volt DC network. |

New era |
Description: |
Contrast this photo to the shot my dad took from roughly the same angle in 1964. Here we have an NJ Transit E60 ready to head into Penn Station with a Bay Head train, and an Amtrak SW 1. Not quite the same as GG 1s and a horde of P 70s. |

Arrows to New York |
Description: |
The electrification was extended to Matawan in 1984, and MU trains were extended there from South Amboy. Thus we have the previously unusual sight of a train of Arrows rolling in from beyond what had been the end of wire. |

Newark train |
Description: |
A CNJ side train that originated from Newark passes the ready tracks at South Amboy behind a pair of ex CNJ GP40Ps. From the equipment, this is the former "Bay Head Empire Builder," named for the cars which came from BN, and ran til the early 80's still in BN and GN colors. |
