WCRC |
Description: |
Washington Central took over a good portion of the BN's former NP lines in central part of the Evergreren State in 1986. The road's headquarters was at Yakima, which is where we find GP9s 301, 302 and CF7 401. In 1996 the WCRC sold bacK most of its trackage to the BN as it reopened the Stampede Pass route. The remaining parts of the shortline were renamed the Columbia Basin RR. |

Lowell Junction |
Description: |
Lowell Junction is located south of Everett, WA. At one time the GN, NP and Milwaukee Road all met here as they approached the city from the south. Here train no. 600, the daily Seattle to Spokane freight, has left its train on the siding next to the former GN main at Lowell while it ran down the old NP line to the right to grab a cut of cars from the former GN Delta Yard. After joining the train and testing the air, they will head out of town and up the hill for Cascade Tunnel, which is about 64 rail miles ahead. |

Deal With It |
Description: |
When you live in the Pacific Northwest you quickly learn that you'd better figure out how to shoot in poor weather if you want to chase trains. On Labor Day, 1988 the goal was to shoot the BN Kirkland Turn as it ran from Everett towards Woodinville. The fog was thick- bad enough I couldn't get the shot I really wanted on a bridge at Snohomish. This was the first picture of the day- still in the fog, at Maltby, midway on the former NP line between Snohomish and Woodinville. |

BN Spud Local |
Description: |
Washington's central section is typically dry, as opposed to the part west of the Cascade Mountains. Nonetheless, traffic here is still largely agricultural, which is allowed by massive irrigation. BN runs a weekday local out of Wenatchee to Quincy, called the Spud Local since GN days, to help tap some of the traffic generated by the area's farmers. Here GP9 1702 and GP38-2 2093 sit while their crew is at lunch. The road's former GN depot is off to the right. |
