Title:  AMTK 3901
Description:  Coach-bar-lounge 3901 was built by Budd in 1950 as Southern Pacific 48-seat divided coach 2360, with a news stand and a conductor’s desk. It was one of five such cars built for service on the SUNSET LIMITED and was renumbered T&NO 433 in 1951, and then SP 2221 in 1961. Amtrak remodeled it into 32-seat coach/bar/lounge 3901 in 1973, and the car was photographed on the PANAMA LIMITED.

AMTK 3920 <I><B>SILVER PARLOR</B></I>
Title:  AMTK 3920 SILVER PARLOR
Description:  Snack bar-coach 3920 SILVER PARLOR was built by Budd in 1949 as Burlington 340. It was one of two cars (340, 341) built for the TWIN ZEPHYR with 30 parlor seats and a 5-seat drawing room. Both were remodeled in 1968 with a snack bar and 44 coach seats, and redone again by Amtrak in 1971 with a snack bar and 52 coach seats. In 1984 SILVER PARLOR was remodeled once again as HEP cafeteria car 8704 for the AUTO-TRAIN. The car was photographed leaving New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal on the northbound PANAMA LIMITED.

Description:  Snack bar coach 3965 was built by Pullman-Standard in 1964 as New York Central 64-seat coach 3204, one of 153 such cars (3000-3152) in Lot No. 6721. In 1968 it was remodeled with 50 seats and a snack bar, and became PC 3204 before going to Amtrak. The car was photographed on the PANAMA LIMITED. (approximate date)

Description:  Forty-four seat coach 4402 was built by Pullman-Standard in 1950 as Union Pacific 5429, one of 50 cars (5400-5449) in Lot no. 7617. They were the UP’s first coaches with outside-swing-hanger trucks and disc brakes. In 1970 Penn Central purchaseb six of the cars and renumbered them 3000-3005, and all of them went to Amtrak as 4400-4405. The 4402 was previously PC 3002, and was photographed on the PANAMA LIMITED.

Description:  Forty-four ~eat coach 4569 was built by the St. Louis Car Co as Union Pacific 5529, one of 15 cars (5528-5542) in SLC Lot No. 1830, built between October 1964 and March 1965. All of the cars went to Amtrak as 4568-4582, and all oe them were upgraded into Heritage Fleet cbrs numbered between 4600 and 4626. The 4569 was photographed on the PANAMA LIMITED, and became the 4626 in 1979 before beind sold to Ringling Brothers in 1994 as RBBX 43002.

Description:  Forty-eight seat coach 4860 was built by Budd in 1953 as Santa Fe 2848, one of 45 cars (2816-2860) in Lot. No. 9613. Forty-two of these went to Amtrak as the 4810-4828 and 4850-4872; and forty of these were upgraded into Heritage Fleet cars 4700-4739, but not in numerical order. The 4860 became the 4721 in 1980 and was remodeled into 88-seat coach 7628 in 1983. It was photographed on the SUNSET LIMITED, which was using conventional coaches instead of the usual Hi-Level cars on this trip.

Description:  The late afternoon winter sun reflects off of 48-seat coach 4871 as the northbound PANAMA LIMITED rolls out of New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. The 487= was built by Budd in 1953 as Santa Fe 2859, one of 45 cars (2816-2860) in Lot. No. 9613, and was unusal in that it still had its skirting. Forty-two of these went to Amtrak as the 4810-4828 and 4850-4872; and forty of these were upgraded into Heritage Fleet cars 4700-4739, but not in numerical order. The 4871 became the 4703 in 1980 and was rebuilt into baggage car 1708 in 1997.

Description:  Forty-eight-seat coach 4892 was built by Pullman-Standard in 1956 as Northern Pacific “Holiday Lounge” parlor-buffet-lounge car 489, one of five such cars (487-491) in PS Lot No. 7642A. All five of the cars were remodeled into 48-seat coaches in 1963 (although two of the seats were reserved for the conductor) and renumbered 581-585. The 581-584 went to Amtrak as 4890-4893. The 4892 was previously NP 583 and was photographed on the northbound PANAMA LIMITED.

The 5011 was photographed on the northbound PANAMA LIMITED leaving New Orleans. In 1985 it was remodeled into Heritage Fleet cafeteria car 8710.

Description:  Fifty-four seat coach 5436 was manufactured by Budd in 1946 as Pennsylvania Railroad 4056, and retained the same number on the Penn Central. It was one of 27 cars built for New York-Florida service on Atlantic Coast Line trains: nine ACL (216-220, 224-227), six RF&P (801-806) and 12 PRR (4046-4057). All but one of the cars (PRR/PC 4054) went to Amtrak as the 5408-5416 and 5420-5436. The 5436 was photographed on the northbound PANAMA LIMITED.

AMTK 6061
Title:  AMTK 6061
Description:  Sixty-seat-coach 6061 was manufactured by the St. Louis Car Co. as Union Pacifi` 44-seat coach 5493, one of 20 cars (5488-5507) built between February and September 1960 in SLC Lot No. 1807. Three of the cars became Great Northern 1008-1010 in 1969, and then Amtrak 4550-4552/ Fourteen other went directly to Amtrak and were assigned numbers 4554-4567. This car was originally assigned Amtrak number 4556, but it was remodeled with 60 seats and became the 6061 instead. In 1973/74 Amtrak increased the capacity on about 20 coaches to 60 seats, but this one was the only one for this group that was altered. The 6061 car was sold to Ringling Brothers and became RBBX 43001, but 12 of the cars in the 4550-4567 series were upgraded into 4600-series Heritage Fleet coaches. Photographed on the PANAMA LIMITED.

Description:  Sixty-four-seat coach 6433 was built in 1946 as New York Central 3057 and was subsequently Penn Central 3625. It was one of 153 cars (3000-3152) built in Pullman-Stand`rd Lot 6721. Over time, all of the cars were renumbered at least once and many of them were remodeled, although the 6433 retained its original configuration. Seventy-seven of these cars went to Amtrak as the 3949-3970- 6094-6098 and 6400-6449. The 6433 was photographed in storage at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal.

These were some of the last passenger cars built after the War Production Board ended the construction of new passenger cars during WWII. The outside-swing-hanger-trucks were a post-war modification. This was one of very few pre-WWII cars initially purchased by Amtrak, and was acquired because the Santa Fe wanted to sell all of its lightweight cars as a package deal. The 8039 was photographed on the SUNSET LIMITED, and was sold in 1981.

It was subsequently upgraded into Heritage Fleet diner 8526 in 1981 and modified into diner-grill 8559 in 1986.

Title:  AMTK 8082 LA GRANGE
Description:  Thirty-six-seat dining car 8082 was built for the Atlantic Coast Line in 1950 as the LA GRANGE and was later Seaboard Coast Line 5952. Thirteen of these diners were built by Pullman-Standard in Lot 6808: 10 for the ACL, two for the Florida East Coast and one for the Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac. One of the ACL cars was wrecked in 1959, and the RF&P car went to Mexico; but the remaining ACL cars and the FEC cars became AMTK 8080-8088 and 8090-8091. The 8082 was photographed on the PANAMA LIMITED at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal, and retired in 1977.

Description:  Counter-diner 8103 was originally Santa Fe 1558, one of 16 cars (1550-1565) built by Budd in 1948 with a 14-seat lunch counter and 20 dining seats. Half of the cars were retired in 1969, while the other eight became Amtrak 8100-8107. The 8103 was photographed on the rear of the westbound SUNSET, where it was either dead-heading west or was serving as an extra food service car behind five sleepers; and was remodeled into Heritage Fleet lounge 3112 in 1981.

Description:  Dormitory/counter/diner 8116 was originally Santa Fe 1575, one of 12 cars (1566-1577) built by Pullman-Standard between June and August 1950 with a 13-seat lunch counter and 20 dining seats. In 1954 nine of the cars (1569-1577) were remodeled with the addition of a crew dormitory area, which reduced the dining area to just eight seats. The unmodified cars were retired in 1968, but the other cars became Amtrak 8110-8118. The 8116 was photographed on the PANAMA LIMITED and was retired in 1977.

Description:  Lunch-counter/bar/lounge car 8350 was delivered in January 1947 as Northern Pacific 494, one of six coach/buffet/lounge cars (NP 494-498, CB&Q 499) built under Pullman-Standard Lot No. 6739 for the NORTH COAST LIMITED. In 1955 they were all remodeled into TRAVELERS REST lunch-counter/bar/lounge cars, with no change of numbers; and in 1971 they became Amtrak 8350-8355. AMTK 8380
Title:  AMTK 8380
Description:  Counter-lounge car 8380 DIXIE TRAVELER was originally Maine Central diner-bar-lounge 15 MERRYMEETING. It was one of four such cars (MEC 15-16, Boston & Maine 70-71) built under Pullman-Standard Lot W6778 in 1947 for service from Boston to Portland and Bangor, but none of these cars served their original owners for very long. The MEC cars were sold to the Chicago & Eastern Illinois in 1951, while the B&M cars went to the Wabash in 1957.

The MEC cars became C&EI 603 MERRY JOURNEY and 604 MERRY MEETING with no interior changes, then went to the Louisville & Nashville in 1959 where they were remodeled as 28-seat diner/18-seat lounge cars 2800 DIXIE TRAVELER and 2801 DIXIE JOURNEY. The L&N remodeled the cars once again in 1964 as 14-seat lunch-counter/8-seat diner/18-seat lounge cars, with no name change. The B&M/WAB cars were retired by the N&W in 1970, but the former MEC/C&EI/L&N cars went to Amtrak as the 8380 and 8381, and were retired in 1977. Description:  Coach-diner 8400 was originally Great Northern 1145, one of two such cars (1145, 1146) delivered by American Car & Foundry in May 1950 for service on the INTERNATIONAL between Seattle and Vancouver, B.C. The two cars became Amtrak 8400 and 8401. Photographed is storage at New Orleans, it was sold the next year.

AMTK 8410
Title:  AMTK 8410
Description:  Coach-buffet-lounge 8410 was originally Chesapeake & Ohio 52-seat coach 1610, one of 59 such cars (1610-1668) built by Pullman-Standard in 1950. Two of the cars, 1610-1611, were rebuilt into coach-buffet-lounge cars in 1956, with no change of number; and became Amtrak 8410-8411 in 1971. The 8410 was photographed on the northbound PANAMA LIMTED and retired the next year.

Title:  AMTK diner 8500
Description:  Amtrak HERITAGE FLEET diner 8500 was on the northbound CRESCENT at Meridian, Mississippi. The car had been built by Budd in November 1948 as Burlington Route 194 SILVER DINER for operation on the CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR. It became Amtrak 8051 in 1971, HERITAGE FLEET car 8500 in September 1979 and then griddle diner 8551 in January 1987. It was sold at auction in January 2019. (N.B. The date on the image is incorrect.)

Description:  Amtrak 8800 was the 64-seat dining room section of twin-unit diner 8800-8801; while car 8801 (on the left) contained the kitchen, a room for the steward and 18 dormitory bunks. The two cars were deadheading from New Orleans to Plains, Georgia on the PEANUT SPECIAL, which was headed for the inauguration of Jimmy Carter; and the trucks and underbody had just been repainted. The cars were built by Budd in 1948 as Pennsylvania 4600-4601 and retained the same numbers on the Penn Central. There were six pairs of these, and four of them went to Amtrak in 1973 as the 8800-8807.

Description:  This coach was built by Budd in April 1948 as Minneapolis & St. Louis 51. It was one of six cars built with a heat exchanger and hot water circulating pump for operation behind motorcars. It became Rock Island 367 ARMOURDALE in 1957 and was sold to the Ashley, Drew & Northern in 1973. The car did not receive an AD&N number, and its only identification here are some Georgia Pacific logos.

Description:  Safety training car 14 was built by Pullman in 1928 as Illinois Central salon-buffet car 4095. The lettering reads Safety Special, Service with Safety. After the ICG became the "new" IC, the car was repainted gray and black for use with the railroad's E-units and renumbered MW 101314.

Description:  Former Illinois Central diner-lounge 4151 was at the Gifford-Hill gravel pit in Fluker, Louisiana. The car was originally diner-lounge 4010, built by Pullman in 1912; and had been modernized by the IC in September 1947. Fluker is on the main line of the IC/ICG/CN 75 miles north of New Orleans.

Description:  Southern Railway dome coach 1613 brings up the rear of the northbound SOUTHERN CRESCENT as it was about to pass under Elysian Fields Avenue in New Orleans. The car was built by Pullman-Standard in 1958 as Wabash 203, became Norfolk & Western 1613 in 1966, moved on to the Central of Georgia and then the Southern.

Description:  Pacific Railroad Society car PAR 2 TIMOTHY B. BLACKSTONE was built by American Car & Foundry in 1950 as a Gulf Mobile & Ohio car of the same name. It was one of four GM&O Plan 9012 cars with eight roomettes, four sections, three bedrooms and one compartment, all of which were retired in 1969. Soon after acquiring the car in 1970, PRS renamed it GOLDEN SUNSET; but it regained its original name when it was repainted in Amtrak colors, as show here, and was later assigned Amtrak number 800367. The car was photographed on the northbound SOUTHERN CRESCENT leaving New Orleans.

Description:  Pacific Railroad Society car PAR 6101 was originally Union Pacific 6101, one of six UP dormitory-lounge cars (6100-6105) built by American Car & Foundry in 1949. All of the cars were retired in 1970-71. It was photographed on the northbound SOUTHERN CRESCENT leaving New Orleans, and it was eventually assigned Amtrak number 800247. The car appeared in the 1981 movie UNDER THE RAINBOW, and was subsequently named CAJON PASS.
