Viewing Album: Northeast WI, Summer 2014
By:
T. P. Bruss
Dates:
6/21/2014 - 9/22/2014
Album Info:
Most of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the summer of 2014, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too. A handful of photos are from Illinois and Iowa too.

WC 1570
Description:
CN local services American Colloid Co. via former C&NW rails at Snells, WI on 8 Jul. '14. Snells is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. A Post Office was established on 4 May 1876, originally called Snell’s Station, sometimes referred to as Snell’s Crossing. This once small, rural community included a depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. Snells was located at Mile 183 on the SOO’s Trevor to Somerset line and Mile 173.1 on the C&NW’s Milwaukee to Marinette line. It does not look like any substantial remnants of the original community remain, even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone.

ACFX 68975, et al.
Description:
A string of covered hoppers spotted on a spur along WSOR, former C&NW, rails southeast of Reed St., in Plymouth, WI on 15 Jul. '14. A tanker truck is parked alongside the spur either loading or unloading one of the cars. This spur, a remnant of the former C&NW mainline, was re-installed quite recently; it does not appear on current satellite maps. These new rails end at E. Clifford St., the next would-be grade crossing, but they will once again carry trains to Kohler, WI in the near future, if I’m not mistaken. I had to include the electrical box on the right because it still has CNW stenciled on it. The former MILW rails in use by WSOR are hidden on the right; you can see some of the old telephone poles that parallel the rails.

DMIR C-176 and LSI 19
Description:
LSI 19 caboose, originally DMIR C-176, stored behind Ace Supply and Rental in Plymouth, WI on 15 Jul. '14. It was on display at Reeve Park, adjacent to the C&NW depot, in Waunakee, WI for many years. On 16 Sep. ’08 it was moved to Plymouth. At that time the plan was to restore it back to original DM&IR paint scheme and road number, it was hoped the project would be completed in 2 or 3 years. It doesn’t look like they have made any progress yet. More information and photographs can be found at: http://www.fuzzyworld3.com/3um/viewtopic.php?t=2518. An old ore car is partially visible to the left of the caboose.

Title:
Unique Grade Crossing at Plymouth, WI
Description:
An interesting and unusual light at the WSOR, former MILW, grade crossing at N. Milwaukee St. in Plymouth, WI on 15 Jul. '14. It appears to be some variant of an Eaglelux Traffic Beacon and Flasher, manufactured by the Eagle Signal Corporation. There used to be a stop sign attached to the mast. The large round light on the top is, or was, a red flasher. The fluted housing below that holds two incandescent light bulbs that would illuminate the stop sign. Some references speculate this may have been the original warning signal for this grade crossing. A more contemporary Griswold crossing signal is in front of and to the right of this light (out of frame). A pair of wig-wag signals can be seen in the background, still in service. Some remnants of the C&NW rails are visible on the other side of the still active rails. Some earlier photos of the light, and some interesting information about the signals at this grade crossing, can be found at: http://www.rxrsignals.net/Wisconsin/L-P/Plymouth/Main/.

GBW 21 Combination RPO/Baggage, ex GBW 52 Coach
Description:
GBW X21 'Winona' on display at National Railroad Museum at Ashwaubenon, WI on 21 Jul. '14. According to http://greenbayroute.com/, it was originally GBW 52, a 60'-0" coach built by Hicks Locomotive and Car Works in 1908. Rebuilt as GBW 21, an RPO/baggage car in 1929-30. Renumbered GBW X21 and renamed ‘Winona’ in Feb. 1945; it was the "rumpus car" in the GB&W's Miller's Specials in the 1950s and 1960s. It was donated to National Railroad Museum in Jul. 1963. Sister GBW 20 was on display at Rapid River, MI for some time, but was moved to the Marion Area Historical Society at Marion, WI on 2 Jul. ‘13. GB&W donated sister GBW 22, ex-GBW 51, to the Wisconsin Historical Society in 1970 for display at Stonefield Village in Cassville, WI. I'm not sure if it is still there, it is not mentioned with the other RR equipment on their website.
